HD 90853 is a single[9]star in thesouthernconstellationCarina. It has theBayer designations Carinae, whileHD 90853 is the identifier from theHenry Draper catalogue. This is avariable star with anapparent visual magnitude that ranges from 3.36 down to 3.51,[10] and thus is bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. It is located at a distance of approximately 1,340 light-years from theSun based onparallax, and has anabsolute magnitude of −4.44.[2] The star is drifting further away with aradial velocity of +9 km/s.[2]

This is an agingbright giant orsupergiant star that has been assignedstellar classifications of F2II[3] and F0Ib,[4] respectively. It has seven[5] times themass of the Sun and has expanded to 45[6] times theSun's radius. It is spinning with aprojected rotational velocity of 22 km/s.[7] The star is radiating 3,466[6] times theluminosity of the Sun from its enlargedphotosphere at aneffective temperature of6,598 K.[6]
