The fainter star has anangular separation of 0.380″ from the primary component.[3] They have a combinedapparent magnitude of 5.52,[2] making HD 34557 faintly visible to the naked eye from dark skies. Based uponparallax measurements made with theHipparcos satellite, this system is roughly 280 light years away.[1] The primary component is spinning rapidly, with aprojected rotational velocity of 217 km/s.[7] It has astellar classification of A3V,[4] making it anA-type main sequence star.
