H. R. Keshava Murthy (22 February 1934 – 21 December 2022) was an Indiangamaka exponent and guru.[1] He was honoured withShantala Natya Sri Award by theGovernment of Karnataka in 1998 andPadma Shri in 2022 by the Government of India in the field of arts.
Murthy was born on 22 February 1934 in a family of gamaka artists to Vedabrahma Ramaswamy Shastry. He resided inHosahalli.[2][3] He was married and had 1 daughter. He died at his house in Hosahalli on 21 December 2022.[1]
A noted expert in the field of gamaka,[4] Murthy received training in music from his father and later from Venkateshaiah.[1] He publicised Kannada epicsKumaravyasas Bharatha andJaiminis Bharatha.[5] His variant of music later came to be known as Keshava Murthygharana.[2]
Murthy was awarded theShantala Natya Sri Award in 1998 for his contribution to classical dance by theGovernment of Karnataka.[6] In 2002, he was awarded theRajyotsava Prashasti award by the Government of Karnataka.[7][8][disputed –discuss] In 2022, theGovernment of India conferred him withPadma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian award,[9] in the field of arts for his contributions to preserveKavya Vachana, a storytelling in the form of art in Karnataka.[10][5]
