Hébuterne (French pronunciation:[ebytɛʁn]) is acommune in thePas-de-Calaisdepartment in the Hauts-de-Franceregion of France[3] 24 kilometres (15 miles) southwest ofArras.

History

Formerly within the ancient county ofArtois, the village was redesignated within the new Department of thePas de Calais after theFrench Revolution.

The rebuilt church

For most of theFirst World War, Hébuterne was in the front line of theWestern Front and occupied by theAllied Forces entrenched on the eastern side of the village facing theImperial German Army 800 yards beyond occupying the village ofGommecourt. In mid-summer 1916, the56th (London) Division of theBritish Army carried out an attack from Hébuterne in an attempt to capture Gommecourt as a part of theBattle of the Somme offensive, which failed with severe losses.
