Gurranabraher (Irish:Garrán na mBráthar, meaning 'grove of the brothers')[1][2] is a residentialsuburb on the north western side ofCork City. Its bounds range from theNorth Cathedral to Bakers Road to Blarney Street. Gurranabraher is located inCork North-CentralDáil Éireann constituency.[3]
The localRoman Catholic church, the Church of the Ascension, was opened in 1955 and acts as the parish for both Gurranbraher and Churchfield.[2] The area is also serviced by aGarda station,[4] a primary health care centre and acredit union.[5] There are also a number of community initiatives based in the parochial hall.[6]
LeisureWorld pool and fitness centre (including the Sam Allen astroturf pitches) is close-by on Knockfree Avenue. There is also a recreational area in Jerry O'Sullivan Park on St. Colmcille's Road.[7] Acommunity gardening project adjoins this park.[8]
Scoil Padre Pio and Blarney Street C.B.S are two local primary schools.[citation needed] There are no secondary schools within Gurranabraher, with the North Monastery, St. Vincent's and the North Pres being the closest.[citation needed]
St. Mary's Health Campus, run by theMercy University Hospital, is the location of an urgent care centre in Gurranabraher.[9][10]
Bus services which serve the area includeBus Éireann route 201 (orbital toCIT andCUH) and route 202 (Apple campus toMahon Point).[11][12]
The localGaelic Athletic Association team isSt. Vincent's Hurling and Football club. Previously in the area there were Gurranabraher (football) and Shandon Rovers (hurling) clubs (Seandún GAA). St. Mary's A.F.C was founded by the North Cathedral, but now play their games in Kilcully.[13] Blue Demons basketball team was founded in the area and played in the local parochial hall.[14] Sunnyside Boxing Club (club of three former Olympians)[15] also trains in the parochial hall. Siam Warriors Thai Boxing Club trains next to the Crucible Snooker club off the Glen Ryan Road.[16]
