Gulabdas Broker was aGujarati language writer fromIndia. He is primarily known for his short stories and one-act plays inGujarati literature.[1]

Biography

Broker was born atPorbandar on 20 September 1909. He completed his education in Gujarati and English literature fromBombay University in 1930. He briefly worked at theBombay Stock Exchange. Later, he started his writing in 1932 when he was jailed during theSatyagraha movement. His first short story collection wasAne Biji Vato ("And Other Talks").[2]

Broker served as the president ofGujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1973 to 1974. He died on 10 June 2006 atPune,Maharashtra.[3][4]

Works

He editedAkhandand, a Gujarati monthly. He wrote large number of short stories, plays, travelogues and autobiography too. Several of them are translated into Hindi, Spanish, German and English.[3][4] He also editedEkanki, a periodical devoted to one-act plays.[1]

Awards

Broker was awarded thePadma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India in 1992.[5] He was also awardedRanjitram Suvarna Chandrak, the highest literary award inGujarati language, in 1998. He also receivedKumar Chandrak in 1968.

The Government of Gujarat awarded him the Narsinh Mehta Award.[3][4]
