Guillaume Jacques (Chinese:向柏霖;pinyin:Xiàng Bólín, born 1979[1]) is a Frenchlinguist who specializes in the study ofSino-Tibetan languages:Old Chinese,Tangut,Tibetan,Gyalrongic andKiranti languages. He also performs research on theAlgonquian andSiouan language families and publishes about languages of other families such asBreton. His case studies in historical phonology are set in the framework ofpanchronic phonology, aiming to formulate generalizations about sound change that are independent of any particular language or language group.

Jacques is one of the main contributors to thePangloss Collection, anopen archive ofendangered-language data.[2]

Guillaume Jacques was awarded theCNRS Bronze Medal in 2015.[3]

Biography

Guillaume Jacques studied linguistics at theUniversity of Amsterdam andParis Diderot University. He obtained his doctorate in 2004 with a dissertation on the phonology and morphology of theJaphug language (one of theGyalrongic languages), which was based on fieldwork carried out inSichuan, China in 2002–2003. He taught atParis Descartes University for four years before taking up a permanent research position at theCentre de recherches linguistiques sur l'Asie orientale (CRLAO).[4]

Guillaume Jacques is one of the Editors of the linguistics journalCahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale. He is a member of theeditorial board ofDiachronica,Linguistics Vanguard, andLinguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area.
