TheGuerreros de Oaxaca (English: Oaxaca Warriors) are aprofessional baseball team in theMexican League based inOaxaca City,Oaxaca,Mexico. Their home field isEstadio Eduardo Vasconcelos.[1]
In October 1995, a group of businessmen, led byAlfredo Harp Helú, learned that theCharros de Jalisco were unable to continue participating in theMexican League.[2] These businessmen saw the opportunity to move the team fromGuadalajara to the city ofOaxaca, and the project was officially presented at a meeting of directors of the league.[3] The franchise move was officially accepted in December of that year. This was the first time thatOaxaca had a professional sports team.[4]
The Guerreros, as they were named, played their first game on 14 March 1996 against thePetroleros de Minatitlán in theParque 18 de marzo de 1938, under the direction of managerAlfredo Ortiz. The team recruited Mexican batterNelson Barrera for its inaugural season.[2][5]
The Guerreros won their first and only league championship in 1998 by sweepingAcereros de Monclova in the final series.
FormerMajor League Baseball playerOscar Azócar played for the Warriors in 2000.
