Guarne is a town andmunicipality in theColombiandepartment ofAntioquia. In 2020, the population was estimated to be 52,129. It is part of the subregion ofEastern Antioquia. It is situated 24 km east ofMedellín.
The first settlers of Guarne wereTahamíes Indians who came from theNare River. In 1541,Alvaro Mendoza entered the Guarne area, but finding nogold, returned to theAburrá Valley. In 1640, searching for gold, CaptainFernando del Toro Zapata andDiego Beltran del Castillo arrived at Guarne. The first non-Amerindian settlers of the area of Guarne wereslaves. In 1757, Guarne became part ofRionegro, and in 1814, Juan del Corral created the Guarne Township.
