Career

[edit]

Grupo Frontera was formed in early 2022, originally performing at weddings and parties. This led them to release their debutEP in March of that year titled,En Vivo, Vol. 1. Their release includes covers of songs such asVicente Fernández's "Estos Celos" andDiego Verdaguer's "La Ladrona".[3] A month later, they released their second EP, containing a cover ofMorat's "No Se Va" which eventually went viral onTikTok and would chart at the end of the year.[1] In December 2022, a second collaboration withFuerza Regida, after "911 (En Vivo)", titled "Bebé Dame" reached number one on theBillboardHot Latin Songs charts and peaked at number 25 onBillboard Hot 100, becoming their first top 40 hit.[4]

Carlos Zamora, Grupo Frontera's original bassist, left the band in late 2022 and was replaced by Brian Ortega.[5]

By May 2023, the band achieved its first top five hit on theBillboard Hot 100 with theBad Bunny collaboration "Un x100to". In response to this, Grupo Frontera announced a 23-date tour to begin in mid-2023. An article byBillboard considered the band's success integral in the breakthrough of theregional Mexican genre.[6] The band achieved fame through theirnorteñocumbias, but upon the release of their full-length debut album in August 2023,El Comienzo, they proved they could delve into other regional Mexican styles, as well as outside the genre.

The band released their second album,Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada on May 10, 2024. The album features songs incorporatingcountry,R&B,electronic, andbachata genres. Guest appearances on the album includeChristian Nodal,Maluma,Morat, andNicki Nicole.[7][8]

Brian Ortega, Grupo Frontera's bassist, was fired from the band in July 2025.[9]

Controversy

[edit]
Main article:Grupo Frontera political controversy

In 2025, after a video of one of the members' relativesdancing toVillage People's "Y.M.C.A" went viral, the band receivedstrong backlash andboycott calls from Mexican fans, who considered it an endorsement of American presidentDonald Trump.[10][11][12] The group responded twice to the controversy in February throughInstagram denying any endorsement of Trump and expressing their support of Mexican people.[13][14]
