

Grigore Ureche (Romanian pronunciation:[ɡriˈɡoreuˈreke]; 1590–1647[1]) was aMoldavianchronicler who wrote on Moldavian history in hisLetopisețul Țării Moldovei (Chronicles of the Land of Moldavia), covering the period from 1359 to 1594.
Grigore Ureche was the son of the influential Moldovan boyar Nestor Ureche,[2] who was an advisor to a prince inPoland. Ureche spent his childhood in thePolish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, where he studied at theJesuit College in L'viv.[3] After returning to thePrincipality of Moldavia, he held many high-ranking offices in the courts of several MoldovanHospodars. During the reign ofVasile Lupu (from 1634) Ureche became the administrator of Lower Moldavia.
Ureche is the first to assert the existence of theRomanian language and itsRomance character. He also acknowledges the commonRoman origin of theRomanians fromMoldavia,Wallachia andTransylvania.
