Gregory James Joly (born May 30, 1954) is aCanadian formerice hockey player who played nine seasons in theNational Hockey League (NHL) for theWashington Capitals andDetroit Red Wings. He won the1974 Memorial Cup with theRegina Pats[1] and the1981 Calder Cup with the AHL'sAdirondack Red Wings.
Joly wasdrafted first overall in the1974 NHL amateur draft by theWashington Capitals from theRegina Pats. Washington's general manager,Milt Schmidt, referred to Joly at the time as "the nextBobby Orr",[2] but over his nine seasons playing with Washington (1974–76) and theDetroit Red Wings (1976–83), Joly spent parts of seven seasons on theAmerican Hockey League (AHL)farm teams of those two organizations. After playing 365National Hockey League (NHL) games over the course of those nine seasons, Joly played his final three years of professional hockey in the AHL.[2] He is considered to have been adraft bust.[3][4][5] Joly scored the last goal at Detroit’sOlympia Stadium.[6]
