Great Habton is a village and formercivil parish about 18 miles fromYork, now in the parish ofHabton, in the county ofNorth Yorkshire, England. In 1961 the parish had a population of 103.[1]
It was part of theRyedale district between 1974 and 2023. It is now administered byNorth Yorkshire Council.
St Chad's Church, Great Habton is the village's Anglican church.[2] The village also has a pub called The Grapes Inn.[3]
The name "Habton" means 'Hab(b)a's farm/settlement'.[4] Great Habton was recorded in theDomesday Book asAbbetune/Abetune/Habetun.[5] Great Habton was formerly atownship in the parish ofKirby Misperton,[6] from 1866 Great Habton was a civil parish in its own right,[7] on 1 April 1986 the parish was abolished and merged withLittle Habton andRyton to form Habton.[8]
