Graves de communi re is anencyclical written byPope Leo XIII in 1901, onChristian Democracy. It is part of a larger body of writings known asCatholic social teaching, that trace their origin toRerum novarum which was issued byPope Leo XIII in 1891. While reaffirming the Church's opposition to individualistic liberalcapitalism, it also denied that the new ideals ofChristian Democracy were an endorsement of the principles of a democratic political system.[1] Leo also criticizessocialism within the work, referring to it as a "harvest of misery".[2]
