Gottfried Dienst (Basel, 9 September 1919 –Bern, 1 June 1998[1]) was aSwissassociation footballreferee. He was mostly known as the referee of the1966 FIFA World Cup final.[2]
Dienst is one of only four men to have twice refereed aEuropean Cup final, which he did in1961 and1965, and one of only two (the other being Italian refereeSergio Gonella) to have refereed both theEuropean Championship and World Cup finals.[3] He refereed the original1968 European Championship final, which ended in a 1–1 draw betweenItaly andYugoslavia. The final was replayed two days later; refereed by the SpaniardJosé María Ortiz de Mendíbil, when the Italians won 2–0.
