The company struggled financially for several years before the Chinese government began heavily subsidizing the country's lithium-ion battery industry in 2009.[8] In 2015, itlisted on theShenzhen Stock Exchange[9] via areverse takeover of Jiangsu Dongyuan Electrical Group Co.[10] In 2022, it also listed in Switzerland onSIX Swiss Exchange, raising US$685 million.[11]

Gotion has actively pursued expansion abroad. It currently operates factories inGöttingen, Germany[12] andFremont, California.[13] It has also announced factories inBig Rapids, Michigan;Manteno, Illinois;[8] andKenitra, Morocco.[14] It has also purchased a 25% stake in InoBat Batteries, a Slovakian battery manufacturer.[2]

In 2025, three of Gotion's employees at its factory in Fremont, California sued the company forwrongful dismissal and alleged that its leadership had routinely employed Chinese citizens withoutvisas, made racist comments about non-Chinese workers, and harassed employees complaining about safety issues.[13][15]
