Gorgias Press is a US-based independentacademic publisher specializing in the history and religion of the Middle East and the larger pre-modern world.
Founded in 2001 by Christine andGeorge Kiraz, the press is based inPiscataway, New Jersey.[1]
The press publishes titles inhistory,religious studies, andlinguistics, with a special focus on theAncient Near East,Syriac,Arabic,Early Christianity,Classical studies,Biblical studies,Jewish studies,Mandaean studies, andIslamic studies.[2] Authors include Jamal-Dominique Hopkins,Sebastian Brock,Jorunn Jacobsen Buckley,Clinton Bennett,David C. Parker,Andrei Orlov,Iain Torrance,Philip Khuri Hitti,George Percy Badger,Ignatius Zakka I Iwas,Ignatius Afram I Barsoum,Ignatius Elias III,Aziz Suryal Atiya, andWilliam Hatch.[3][4] The press also publishescritical editions and English translations of previously untranslated or under-translated works, such as those ofHippolytus of Rome,Jacob of Sarug, andIsaac the Syrian.[5][6][7]
Gorgias publishes more than 30 book series, includingGorgias Handbooks,GorgiasUgaritic Studies,GorgiasMandaean Studies,Judaism in Context, andTexts from Christian Late Antiquity.[8] In addition to books, the press publishes severalpeer-reviewedacademic journals, including theJournal of the Canadian Society for Syriac Studies and theAmerican Journal of Ancient History.[9]
In 2010, Gorgias published three volumes of peer-reviewed articles as part ofFoundations for Syriac Lexicography in association with the International Syriac Language Project.[10] Beginning in 2012, the press published the first of an ongoing 35 volume English translation of theAntioch Bible, anAramaic text of theSyriacPeshitta.[11][12]
In 2018, German academic publisherWalter de Gruyter and Gorgias entered into ane-book distribution partnership.[13]
In 2025, the press launched theGorgias Press Books eReader app in partnership with Glassboxx, to enable retail customers to download eBook editions of the Gorgias catalog.
2026 is the 25th anniversary of Gorgias Press.
