A part of theCleveland Public Parks District, the park opened in 1893 and is situated on 122 acres (49 ha) of land adjacentLake Erie on the city's East Side. It is named in honor of philanthropist and industrialist William J. Gordon, one of the founders of theCleveland Iron Mining Company, was responsible for initially landscaping the stretch of land, with the specific intention of bequeathing it to the City of Cleveland as a public recreation area.[1]

In 2022, at the final event of that year's Lake Erie Walleye Trail series offishing tournaments, based in a parking lot near the park'sboat ramps, two anglerswere exposed as cheaters after their winning fish were found to have been stuffed with lead weights. They were stripped of their title and later pleaded guilty to criminal charges.,[5]
