Charles Gordon Carroll III (February 2, 1928 – September 20, 2005) was an American film producer. He is known for his work on theAlien franchise (1979–2004), for which he co-foundedBrandywine Productions withDavid Giler andWalter Hill, to produce theAlien film series. He was also associated withJack Lemmon, producing four films through the actor'sJalem Productions company (1964–1970). He died on September 20, 2005, in Los Angeles, California.[1]
Carroll was raised inNew York City where he was influenced by his father's love of literature. He received his education fromPrinceton University in advertising[1] and after military duty as a first lieutenant in theKorean War, he returned to Manhattan and entered the advertising world atFoote, Cone & Belding.
He began his film career as executive producer ofHow to Murder Your Wife, which was filmed in March 1964 and produced throughJack Lemmon's independent film production company,Jalem Productions. In August 1964, Lemmon appointed Carroll vice president of Jalem Productions.[2][3] From there, he went on to produce other films through Jalem, includingLuv andCool Hand Luke (both 1967), andThe April Fools (1969).
After parting ways with Lemmon, he partnered withPaul Newman (who had starred inCool Hand Luke) to makePat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973). He later worked on such films asBlue Thunder (1983) starringRoy Scheider,The Best of Times (1986) starringKurt Russell andRobin Williams, andRed Heat (1988) starringArnold Schwarzenegger andJim Belushi. He also produced the first five films of theAlien franchise:Alien (1979),Aliens (1986),Alien 3 (1992),Alien Resurrection(1997), andAlien vs. Predator (2004).
Carrol died of aheart attack on September 20, 2005, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., at the age of 77. His body wascremated and his ashes were given to his family.
He was producer for all films unless otherwise noted.
