TheGonypetidae are a new (2019)family ofpraying mantids, based on thetype genusGonypeta. The name was created by Westwood[1] and it has been revived as part of a major revision of mantid taxonomy;[2] the subfamilyIridopteryginae having been moved here from the obsolete familyIridopterygidae. TheGonypetinae include Asian genera transferred from the obsolete taxaAmelinae andLiturgusidae.
The new placement is in superfamilyGonypetoidea (of group Cernomantodea) and infraorderSchizomantodea. Genera in this family have been recorded from: NE Africa, theMiddle East, India,Indochina,Malesia through to New Guinea.[3]
