Goletas Channel is achannel andstrait on the north side ofVancouver Island inBritish Columbia,Canada.[1] It separates Vancouver Island fromHope Island andNigei Island,[2][3] located just east ofCape Sutil, the northernmost point of Vancouver Island. The waters of Goletas Channel are part of northernQueen Charlotte Strait.
TheNahwitti River empties into the western end of Goletas Channel, near the site of the historicKwakwakaʼwakw village andmaritime fur trade harbor known asNahwitti.
Goletas Channel was named by the Spanish naval officersDionisio Alcalá Galiano andCayetano Valdés y Flores during their 1792 voyage around Vancouver Island, after theirgoletas (a Spanish term approximately equivalent to English "schooner"),Sutil andMexicana. The channel was labeledSalida de las Goletas on their chart, published in 1793.[1][4]
