"Glory" is a song by American rapperCommon (Lonnie Lynn, as awarded) and American singerJohn Legend. It was written by John Legend, Common, andRhymefest.[2][3][4] The song was released on December 11, 2014, byColumbia Records as the theme song from the 2014 filmSelma, which portrays the 1965Selma to Montgomery marches. Common also co-starred in the film asCivil Rights Movement leaderJames Bevel.

Commercially, the song peaked at number 49 on the USBillboard Hot 100. A music video for the song was directed byParamount Pictures and was released on January 12, 2015. The song won the award forBest Original Song at the87th Academy Awards (2015) and the72nd Golden Globe Awards (2015), as well as the award forBest Song Written for Visual Media at the58th Annual Grammy Awards (2016).

Common co-starred in the filmSelma, and sang "Glory" as the end-credits rolled.

The music video was directed byParamount Pictures.[1] It was put on Common's officialVevo account on January 12, 2015.[9] The video stars Legend and Common. The video, which includes footage from the film, begins with Legend playing the piano and then singing, with Commonrapping in a different location.

Live performances

"Glory" was performed by Legend and Common on the American morning television showGood Morning America on January 5, 2015.[10]

On February 8, 2015, the duo performed the song as culmination to the57th Annual Grammy Awards ceremonies held at theStaples Center inLos Angeles,California.

Legend and Common performed "Glory" during the87th Academy Awards show on February 22, 2015 using a stage-setting of Selma'sEdmund Pettus Bridge. The song won the Oscar forBest Original Song.[11]

In October 2015, Common surprised a student choir inCompton, California with a live performance of "Glory" in support ofMy Brother's Keeper Challenge. The promotion was run byOmaze, a private internet company that raises funds for charity through online auctions and merchandise sales.[12]

A year later on October 26, 2016, Common performed the song withYolanda Adams at theWhite House on theSouth Lawn forBET Presents: Love and Happiness: An Obama Celebration.[13]

It was performed by Legend and Common, backed by a choir, at the2020 Democratic National Convention. They also played it during aJoe Biden rally atPennsylvania, a day before the2020 United States presidential election.

"Glory" debuted on theBillboard Hot 100 at number 92. It became Common's fourth charted song of his own,[14] and peaked at number 49.[15]
