Giuliana Rancic (/ˈrænsɪk/;née DePandi; born August 17, 1974) is an Italian-born Americanentertainment reporter and television personality. She is a co-anchor ofE! News and resides inChicago andLos Angeles.[1]

Early life

Rancic was born inNaples,Italy and immigrated to theUnited States with her family at age seven.[2][3][4] Her father was a tailor who owned a store inWhite Flint Mall, and they lived nearby inBethesda, Maryland; Rancic went toWalt Whitman High School, where she was a cheerleader.[5]

She had surgery to correct herscoliosis when she was 21.[6] She received abachelor's degree injournalism from theUniversity of Maryland, College Park, and amaster's degree in journalism fromAmerican University.[2][3] During this time, she worked for aCapitol Hill news bureau covering stories related to the U.S. government.[2][3] Rancic also graduated fromBarbizon Modeling and Acting School.[7]

Entertainment career

Rancic joinedE! network'sE! News as a reporter in 2002 and became an anchor in 2005.[2][3] Over the years, she has shared co-hosting responsibilities withRyan Seacrest,Terrence J, andJason Kennedy.[8]

Additionally, she co-hosted E!'sFashion Police and often co-hostsred carpet events for award shows, such as theGolden Globes and theAcademy Awards.[2][3] She is the creator and executive producer of MTV'sCelebrity Rap Superstar, which premiered in 2007.[3] She and her husband,Bill Rancic, star in thereality-television showGiuliana and Bill which aired on E!.[9] She appeared in the movieBring It On: Fight to the Finish in a brief scene.[10] Rancic also has hosted theMiss USA andMiss Universe beauty pageants on NBC.[11]

Rancic won the 2014Daytime Emmy Award for Fan Favorite.[12]

In February 2015, Rancic faced backlash over her controversial comments about synthetic dreadlocks worn byZendaya at the Oscars, remarking that the hair looked like it smelled of "patchouli andweed".[13]

On July 10, 2015, Rancic announced that after nearly a decade, she would be leaving her position as co-anchor onE! News, yet would continue to be the host ofFashion Police.[14] On September 4, 2018, the personality returned to the role of anchor.[15]

In May 2021, Rancic announced that after 20 years, she would be leaving her position as co-host ofLive from the Red Carpet.[16] In the same month, E! announced thatLaverne Cox would take over for Rancic as host ofLive from the Red Carpet.[17]

In August 2011, Rancic and her husband announced plans to open a restaurant in partnership withLettuce Entertain You Enterprises.[18] The restaurant was namedRPM Italian, with a menu including dishes inspired by Rancic's mother, "Mama DePandi", and it opened in theRiver North district ofChicago in February 2012.[19] The partnership opened several more restaurants, includingRPM Steak in Chicago, anotherRPM Italian inWashington, D.C., and a plannedRPM On the Water opening in 2019 in Chicago.[20] The restaurants have been popular with celebrities, including PresidentBarack Obama and First LadyMichelle Obama.[21]

In 2013, Giuliana launched her clothing line, G by Giuliana, onHSN.[22] She also launched a wine line, Xo, G.[23]

In 2013, Rancic, who has a history of breast cancer, founded Fab-U-Wish, a charity that grants wishes to women undergoing breast cancer treatment.[24]

Personal life

On December 15, 2006, Giuliana andBill Rancic announced their engagement.[25] They were married on September 1, 2007, in a ceremony onCapri at Sancta Sophia Church inAnacapri.[26] The family owns homes inChicago,Illinois, andBrentwood, California, and a vacation home onLake Coeur d'Alene,Idaho.[27]

The two have publicly discussed their fertility issues on television talk shows, having tried to conceive since approximately the beginning of 2009.[28] The couple beganin vitro fertilization (IVF) in March 2010,[28] and Rancic got pregnant in the spring of 2010, but she miscarried at nine weeks.[29][30] She had an IVF transfer for a second time in November 2010; however, the procedure did not result in a pregnancy. When the couple decided to try for a third round of IVF, her doctor recommended amammogram, which is how she found out she had breast cancer. Despite her condition, the couple were still motivated to have a baby, so they continued with the egg retrieval and found a surrogate.[31]

On October 17, 2011, during an interview onToday, Rancic announced she had been diagnosed with early stagebreast cancer, for which she would be treated with a doublelumpectomy, followed byradiation treatment.[32] She underwent surgery in mid-October 2011 and returned to work at E! News about a week later.[33] On December 5, 2011, Rancic disclosed she had decided to undergo a bilateralmastectomy.[34][35][36]

On April 23, 2012, Giuliana and Bill announced onThe Today Show that they were expecting their first child via agestational surrogate.[37] Their son was born in late August 2012.[38][39]

Awards

Rancic was ranked #93[40] on theMaxim Hot 100 Women of 2004. She was also featured inPeople magazine's 100 Most Beautiful of 2006 issue. Giuliana was nominated Favorite TV Celebreality Star for the 2012People's Choice Awards.[41]In June 2014, Rancic was named "Fan Favorite" during theDaytime Emmy Awards. She dedicated the award to her six million followers on social media.[12]
