Giovanni Pettinato (30 April 1934, inTroina – 19 May 2011, inRome) was anAssyriologist andpaleographer of writings from the ancient Near East, specializing in theEblaite language,[1] His major contributions to the field include the deciphering of theEblaite script, discovered byPaolo Matthiae in 1974–75.[2][3][4][5]

Pettinato graduated fromHeidelberg in 1968, where he had studied for ten years. In 1968 he began teachingAssyriology at the University of Rome.[6]

Pettinato died on 19 May 2011 at the age of 76. He was anemeritus of several associations, including theAccademia dei Lincei[7] and authored several publications about theSumerian andMesopotamian civilizations.[8]
