Giovanni Martusciello (born 19 August 1971) is an Italianassociation footballcoach and former player.[2][3]
An attacking midfielder, Martusciello started his career in his native island ofIschia, playing with then-Serie C1 clubIschia Isolaverde. He left his hometown club in 1995 to joinEmpoli, also in the Serie C1 league, being one of the protagonists of the club's two consecutive promotions up to theSerie A under a young coachLuciano Spalletti. He made his top-flight debut on 31 August 1997 in a game againstRoma.
In 1999, he left Empoli to joinGenoa, and then down to Serie C1 withPalermo in January 2000. He returned to playSerie B withCittadella andCatania in the following three seasons before ending his career after minor league stints withSambenedettese,Lucchese andPontedera.
After his retirement as a footballer, Martusciello returned to Empoli, this time as a youth coach. He was then promoted as assistant underAlfredo Aglietti, thenMaurizio Sarri and, lastly,Marco Giampaolo. In the summer of 2016, he was named the new head coach of Empoli for the upcoming2016–17 Serie A campaign, which was his first role as a head coach outright. He completed the season with Empoli relegated on the final matchday, which led to him leaving the club. He was successively appointed as technical collaborator ofLuciano Spalletti atInter Milan.[4] Spalletti was relieved from his duty as Inter's head coach in June 2019, and subsequently, Mastusciello joined the staff of newly appointedJuventus head coachMaurizio Sarri as an assistant manager. For the first two matches of the2019–20 season, Martusciello took the lead on the bench with Sarri out due to pneumonia.[5]
Martusciello successively joined Sarri in his coaching stint atLazio in 2021. In March 2024, following Sarri's resignation from his head coaching post, Martusciello was named interim head coach in charge of the first team.[6] He guided Lazio in an away game againstFrosinone, ended in a 3–2 win for thebiancazzurri, before leaving the club to make room forIgor Tudor.
On 3 July 2024, Martusciello was unveiled as the new head coach ofSerie B clubSalernitana.[7]
