Gilson Kleina (born 30 March 1968) is a Brazilianfootballcoach, currently in charge ofBoavista.

Managerial career

Born inCuritiba, Kleina started his career atCoritiba's youth setup, as a fitness coach. He later acted asAbel Braga's assistant at the same club, also having stints atOlympique de Marseille andAtléttico Mineiro. His first managerial experience occurred in 2001, withVila Nova.[1]

After another spell as Braga's assistant atBotafogo, Kleina took overIraty in 2002, and subsequently was in charge ofCriciúma,[2]Paraná (three stints), Iraty,[3]Caldense,Cianorte,Paysandu,[4]Coruripe,Gama,[5]Ipatinga,Caxias and Vila Nova.

On 27 August 2009, Kleina signed withDuque de Caxias Futebol Clube, as a replacement toRodney Gonçalves.[6] After stints atBoavista and Ipatinga, he returned to the club on 7 June 2010.[7]

In November 2010, Kleina was appointed manager ofPonte Preta. He achieved promotion from theSérie B in the end of the following year, taking the club tothe main category after a six-year absence.

On 19 September 2012, Kleina was namedSociedade Esportiva Palmeiras manager, in the place of firedLuiz Felipe Scolari.[8] Despitesuffering relegation, he brought back the club to the first division as champions, but was still sacked on 8 May 2014.[9]

On 13 August 2014, Kleina was appointed at the helm ofBahia,[10] but resigned just three months later.[11] The following 24 March, he was announced atAvaí.[12]

On 11 December 2015, Kleina was presented at his first club Coritiba, now as first team manager.[13] He left the club the following 2 June,[14] and was namedGoiás manager on 5 September.[15]

On 23 March 2017, Kleina returned to Ponte Preta,[16] but was relieved from his duties on 16 September.[17] On 16 October, he was namedChapecoense manager.[18]

Kleina was sacked byChape on 6 August 2018, with the club seriously threatened with relegation.[19] On 2 October, he returned to Ponte in the place of sackedMarcelo Chamusca, being sacked on 18 February 2020 after a poor start ofthe campaign.[20]

On 15 August 2020, Kleina was announced manager ofNáutico, replacingGilmar Dal Pozzo.[21] He returned to Ponte for a fifth spell on 28 May of the following year.[22][23]

On 19 February 2022, after a 0–3 loss to rivalsGuarani, Kleina was sacked,[24] and returned to Chapecoense on 20 March.[25] He was also dismissed from the latter on 5 July, after 16 matches.[26]

On 31 January 2023, after a short period in charge ofBrusque, Kleina was named head coach ofPortuguesa, replacing sackedMazola Júnior.[27] He narrowly avoided relegation with the side in the2023 Campeonato Paulista, but left on 17 April after failing to agree new terms.[28]
