Gillian Elizabeth Robertson[7] (born May 17, 1995) is a Canadian professionalmixed martial artist. She currently competes in the women'sStrawweight division of theUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC). As of August 19, 2025, she is #10 in theUFC women's strawweight rankings.[8]

Background

Robertson was born inNiagara Falls,Ontario, Canada. She started cardio kickboxing training at the age of 16 at American Top Team. She then joined MMA classes after a few months and started competing two years later.[5]

Mixed martial arts career

Robertson started her professional MMA career in 2016 after amassing a record of 9–1 in amateur fights. After fighting in five professional bouts[9] she participated inThe Ultimate Fighter 26 competition series and was subsequently signed by the UFC after the show.[10]

The Ultimate Fighter

In August 2017, it was announced that Robertson was one of the fighters featured onThe Ultimate Fighter 26,[11] UFC TV series, where the process to crown the UFC's inaugural 125-pound women's champion will take place.[12]

In the preliminary fights, Robertson facedBarb Honchak and lost the fight via TKO in the second round.[13]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Robertson made her UFC debut on December 1, 2017, onThe Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale againstEmily Whitmire.[14] She won the fight via a submission in round one.[15]

Her next fight came on May 27, 2018, atUFC Fight Night: Thompson vs. Till againstMolly McCann.[16] At the weigh-ins, McCann weighed in at 127 pounds, 1 pound over the flyweight non-title fight limit of 126. She was fined 20 percent of her purse, which went to Robertson.[17] She won the fight via a rear-naked choke in round two.[18]

On September 22, 2018, Robertson facedMayra Bueno Silva atUFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Anders.[19] She lost the fight via a submission in round one.[20]

Robertson facedVeronica Macedo on February 23, 2019, atUFC Fight Night: Błachowicz vs. Santos.[21] She won the fight via submission in the second round.[22]

Robertson faced Sarah Frota on July 27, 2019, atUFC 240.[23] She won the fight via technical knockout in round two.[24]

In the lead up to the Frota fight, Robertson would begin training with Jose Torres and coach Din Thomas at ATT. This was beginning of their partnership once Thomas and the two fighters left ATT.[25]

Robertson facedMaycee Barber on October 18, 2019, atUFC on ESPN 6.[26] She lost the fight via technical knockout in round one.[27]

Robertson was expected to faceTaila Santos on June 20, 2020, atUFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Volkov. Due to undisclosed reasons, Robertson's opponent changed and she instead facedCortney Casey.[28] She won the fight via a rear-naked choke submission in round three.[29]

Ahead of her fight with Botelho, Robertson was given her black belt inBrazilian Jiu Jitsu by coach Din Thomas. Robertson described the event as emotional and joyous after nine years of work.[30]

During theCOVID-19 pandemic Robertson left American Top Team with her head coach, Din Thomas and teammate Jose Torres.[30]

Robertson facedPoliana Botelho on October 18, 2020, atUFC Fight Night 180.[31] She won the fight via unanimous decision.[32]

Robertson was scheduled to faceAndrea Lee on December 12, 2020, atUFC 256.[33] However, Lee pulled out in early December due to a broken nose and Robertson facedTaila Santos instead atUFC Fight Night: Thompson vs. Neal.[34] Robertson lost the fight via unanimous decision.[35]

Robertson was next expected to faceMiranda Maverick atUFC 258 on February 13, 2021.[36] However, hours before the fight, Robertson had a non-COVID related illness and the bout was cancelled.[37] The pair eventually was reschedule toUFC 260 on March 27, 2021.[38] Robertson lost the fight via unanimous decision.[39]

Robertson facedPriscila Cachoeira on December 11, 2021, atUFC 269.[40] At the weigh-ins, Cachoeira weighed in at 129 pounds, three pounds over the flyweight non-title fight limit. The bout proceeded at catchweight with Cachoeira fined 30% of her purse, which went to Robertson.[41] Robertson won the fight via a rear-naked choke submission in the first round.[42]

Robertson facedJJ Aldrich, replacingAriane Lipski, on March 12, 2022, atUFC Fight Night 203.[43] She lost the fight via unanimous decision.[44]

Robertson was scheduled to faceMelissa Gatto on September 17, 2022, atUFC Fight Night 210.[45]However, Gatto was removed from the event for undisclosed reasons, and she was replaced byMariya Agapova.[46] Robertson won the fight via rear-naked choke.[47]

Robertson faced Piera Rodríguez on April 15, 2023, atUFC on ESPN 44.[48] She won the fight via an armbar submission in the second round.[49] This win earned her thePerformance of the Night award.[50]

Robertson facedTabatha Ricci on June 24, 2023, atUFC on ABC 5.[51] She lost the bout via unanimous decision.[52]

Robertson facedPolyana Viana on January 20, 2024, atUFC 297.[53] She won by technical knockout in the second round after dominating most of the bout on the ground.[54] This fight earned her thePerformance of the Night award.[55]

Robertson was expected to faceMichelle Waterson-Gomez on June 1, 2024, atUFC 302.[56] However, for unknown reasons, the bout was moved to June 29, 2024 atUFC 303.[57] Robertson controlled the majority of the bout on the ground and won the fight by unanimous decision.[58]

Robertson facedLuana Pinheiro on November 9, 2024, atUFC Fight Night 247.[59] With a lot of ground control time, she won the fight by unanimous decision.[60] She was also noted as having thrown the first legal12–6 elbow under theUnified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, since they were legalised on 1 November 2024, in this fight.[61]

Robertson facedMarina Rodriguez on May 3, 2025, atUFC on ESPN 67.[62] She won the fight by technical knockout in the second round.[63]

Robertson was scheduled to face Iasmin Lucindo atUFC on ESPN 73 in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 13, 2025.[64] However, Lucindo withdrew due to an undisclosed injury and was replaced by formerUFC Women's Strawweight Championship challengerAmanda Lemos.[65]

Professional grappling career

2020–2021

Robertson has competed for the professional grappling promotion Submission Underground on several occasions while her MMA career was ongoing. At SUG 17 on August 30, 2020, she faced Amanda Loewen and lost by armbar in EBI overtime.[66] She returned at SUG 20 for the promotion's end of year event on December 30, 2020, and submittedPearl Gonzalez with a rear-naked choke inside regulation time.[67] At SUG 22 on April 25, 2021, Robertson faced Liz Tracy and was lost by armbar in EBI overtime.[68] She then returned at SUG 23 on May 23, 2021, where she faced top BJJ competitor Raquel Canuto and was submitted with a guillotine in regulation time.[69] At SUG 26 on August 15, 2021, Robertson faced fellow UFC veteran and formerUFC Women's Flyweight Championship challengerKatlyn Chookagian and won by fastest escape time in EBI overtime.[70]

Robertson also took part in a bantamweight Combat Jiu-Jitsu tournament at Medusa 1 on October 2, 2021, getting submitted with a kneebar in the opening round by Nikki Sullivan.[71] She faced Chrissy Briggs in a grappling match on the preliminary card of Fury Pro Grappling 3 on December 30, 2021, winning a unanimous decision victory.[72]

2022–2024

Robertson returned to the promotion at Fury Pro Grappling 6 on December 30, 2022, to face former two-timeUFC Women's Strawweight ChampionRose Namajunas in the main event, submitting her with a rear-naked choke in 65 seconds.[73]

Robertson competed againstMontana De La Rosa in the main event of Pit Submission Series 3 on March 23, 2024.[74] She won via unanimous decision.[75]
