British statistical geneticist (born 1973)
Gilean Alistair Tristram McVean (born February 1973)[ 5] is a professor of statisticalgenetics at theUniversity of Oxford ,[ 6] fellow ofLinacre College, Oxford and co-founder and director ofGenomics plc .[ 5] [ 7] He also co-chaired the1000 Genomes Project analysis group.[ 8] [ 9]
Gilean McVean speaking at the 2010 GEM meeting at theWellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Hinxton From 1991-94, he completed aBachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford.[ 10] He completed hisPhD in the Department of Genetics at theUniversity of Cambridge supervised byLaurence Hurst [ 11] [ 12] in 1998.[ 3] [ 13]
Career and research [ edit ] McVean completedpostdoctoral research at theUniversity of Edinburgh from 1997 to 2000, supervised byBrian andDeborah Charlesworth .[ 14] [ 13]
From 2000-04, he was aRoyal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Statistics at Oxford, where he has also been a University lecturer in Mathematical Genetics since 2004. He was reappointed in 2009 until retirement age.[ 15] In October 2006, he was appointed professor of statistical genetics at the University of Oxford.[ 16]
McVean's research[ 17] focuses onpopulation genetics , statistics[ 18] andevolutionary biology including theInternational HapMap Project ,[ 19] [ 20] recombination rates in thehuman genome [ 21] and the1000 Genomes Project .[ 22] [ 23]
McVean developed a statistical method to look at recombination rate which helped to identifyPRDM9 as a hotspot positioning gene.[ 24] In 2014, withPeter Donnelly , McVean co-founded Genomics plc, a genomics analysis company, as acorporate spin-off of the University of Oxford.[ 5] In 2017, he was a founding director of theBig Data Institute at the University of Oxford.[ 25]
In 2006 McVean was awarded aPhilip Leverhulme Prize .[ 26] [ 27]
In 2010, McVean was awarded theFrancis Crick Medal and delivered that year's lecture entitled "Our genomes, our history".[ 28]
In 2012, he was awarded theWeldon Memorial Prize .[ 29]
In 2013, he presented a talk TEDxWarwick entitledA Thousand Genomes a Thousand Stories .[ 30]
In May 2014, McVean was elected as a member of theEuropean Molecular Biology Organisation .[ 31]
McVean was electedFellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2016 [ 32] and aFellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci).[ 33] [ 34]
