Gil Goldstein (born November 6, 1950, inBaltimore, Maryland) is an Americanjazz pianist and accordionist. He has won 5Grammy Awards and he was nominated 8 times.[1]

Biography

He began studying accordion at age 5 after noticing it inThe Lawrence Welk Show[2] and stating he instantly connected with it personally, but later moved on to cello and piano at age 10. He studied at theBerklee College of Music and by 1973 was working withPat Martino andLee Konitz. He started with theGil Evans Orchestra in the early 1980s and also worked withWayne Shorter,Billy Cobham, andJim Hall. He returned to accordion for an album byMichel Petrucciani and occasionally uses it on his solo albums.[3] As an accordionist he toured withRichard Galliano in 2000 but also played piano on the tour. During the 1980s and 90s he was a member of the groupElements.

In 1990 he toured Germany with theBlues Brothers, temporarily replacingLeon Pendarvis on keyboards.[4]

In 2007 he released the albumThe Music of Elton John (ObliqSound, 2007) withSteve Swallow,Paul Motian, and Italian saxophonistPietro Tonolo. The quartet performed jazz arrangements of some ofElton John's most popular songs.

Goldstein composed music for the filmsRadio Inside (1994) andSimply Irresistible (1999). He performed "I Love Paris" in the filmDe-Lovely. Two of his Grammy Awards were for his production and arrangement credits for the albumWide Angles byMichael Brecker. He has taught atNew York University.
