José Gildásio Pereira de Matos (born November 3, 1966), commonly known by the nicknameGil Baiano, is a retired professional association footballright back, who played for severalCampeonato Brasileiro Série A clubs, and for theBrazil national team.
Born inTucano,Bahia, Gil Baiano started playing professionally in 1987, defendingCampinas' clubGuarani.[2] In 1988, he was transferred toBragantino, ofBragança Paulista, winning theCampeonato Paulista in 1990, and playing 62Campeonato Brasileiro Série A games[3] during his spell at the club.[4] In 1993, he joinedPalmeiras, where he played 19 Série A games.[3] leaving the club in 1994, to defendVitória, playing 20 games Série A until leaving the club.[3] In 1995, he played 20 Série A games forParaná,[3] leaving the club in 1996, to play for Portuguese clubSporting Portugal.[4] In 1998, he returned to Brazil, playing forItuano,[2] then Paraná again,[2] where he played nine Série A games.[3] In 1999, he played again for Bragantino, joiningComercial-SP in 2000. In 2000, he also played four Série A games for Paraná,[3] joiningXV de Piracicaba in 2001, and retiring while playing for Bragantino in 2002.[2]
Gil Baiano played seven games defending theBrazil national team, without scoring a goal.[5] His first game was played on September 12, 1990, againstSpain.[5] He played his last game for Brazil on March 26, 1991, againstArgentina.[5]
