Giancarlo Carlos (Martinez) Alvarado (born January 24, 1978) is a Puerto Rican professionalbaseballpitcher. He played in theChinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for theMacoto Cobras andUni-President 7-Eleven Lions, and inNippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for theHiroshima Toyo Carp andYokohama DeNA BayStars. He was raised in Camuy, Puerto Rico. He also played in international competitions with thePuerto Rico national baseball team.
Alvarado was signed as an undrafted free agent by thePittsburgh Pirates in 1995 and made his professional baseball debut with the rookie-levelGulf Coast League Pirates that same year. After two seasons in theGulf Coast League, he was promoted to the Single-AAugusta GreenJackets in 1997. He remained in the Pirates system through 2001, playing with theLynchburg Hillcats and Double-AAltoona Curve. He also played in thePuerto Rico League in the winter of 2001.
Alvarado left the Pirates organization as a free agent in 2002 and played for theHigh Desert Mavericks in theMilwaukee Brewers organization in 2002 and theLakeland Tigers andErie SeaWolves in theDetroit Tigers organization in 2003.
Unable to land a job in the affiliated minors after the 2003 season, Alvarado pitched for the independentLancaster Barnstormers andNewark Bears, theMacoto Cobras inTaiwan and a couple ofMexican League teams during 2004–2005.
TheCincinnati Reds picked Alvarado up for 2005 and assigned him to the Double-AChattanooga Lookouts. He also pitched for thePuerto Rico team in the Olympic Qualifying series and forGigantes de Carolina in the2007 Caribbean Series.
In 2007, Alvarado pitched forSaltillo Saraperos in Mexico and in 2008 for theSalt Lake Bees in theLos Angeles Angels of Anaheim system, his first appearance at the Triple-A level. His 131 strikeouts for the Bees were third in thePacific Coast League.
After the season, Alvarado pitched for theUni-President 7-Eleven Lions in theTaiwan Series and the2008 Asia Series. He then pitched forPuerto Rico in the2009 Caribbean Series and the2009 World Baseball Classic.
Alvarado signed a minor league contract with theLos Angeles Dodgers for the 2009 season and remained in the rotation for the Triple-AAlbuquerque Isotopes for the entire season, finishing with a 13–10 record and a 3.49 ERA in 27 appearances.
In 2009–10 off season, Alvarado signed with Japan's Central League sideHiroshima Toyo Carp.[1]
Alvarado competed in the2013 World Baseball Classic for thePuerto Rican national baseball team.[2] Prior to the tournament, he signed a minor league contract with theColorado Rockies.[3]
Alvarado signed a minor league contract with theNew York Mets organization on June 6, 2013, and was assigned to theLas Vegas 51s, their Triple-A affiliate.
Alvarado spent the 2025 season as the pitching coach for theAcereros de Monclova of theMexican League. He was replaced in the role byIsidro Márquez on November 19, 2025.[4]
