Germa (Greek Γέρμα) orGermokoloneia (Γερμοκολώνεια, fromLatinColonia Iulia Augusta Felix Germenorum) was an ancient andByzantine city in theRoman province ofGalatia Secunda. The Byzantine writerTheophanes informs us that at a later period Germa took the name ofMyriangeli.[1] The few archaeological remains lie close to present-dayBabadat inEskişehir Province,Turkey.[2][3]
When between 25 and 20 BCEAugustus made Galatia a Roman province, he founded Germa as aRoman colony. The city was situated at the point where the road fromAncyra forked, one branch going toDorylaeum, the other toPessinus. From the time ofDomitian it had a mint.
Its Christianbishopric was a residential see until the 12th century and is now, as "Germa in Galatia", atitular see of theCatholic Church.[4]
