Gerard Huerta is an Americantypographer andgraphic designer who designed several well-known logos, including those forHBO andAC/DC, and publication mastheads such asTime magazine andPC Magazine.[1]
Huerta was born in 1952, and raised in southernCalifornia. He studied atArtCenter College of Design inPasadena, majoring in illustration. Following his graduation in 1974, he moved to New York and worked atCBS Records as a staff album cover designer. In this period, he was involved in creating logos and artwork for musicians and bands such asAC/DC,Willie Nelson,Ted Nugent,Bob Dylan,Alvin Lee, and many others.[2][3]

After leaving CBS to work as an independent designer, Huerta designed lettering forAC/DC'sHigh Voltage andLet There Be Rock albums, the latter later being adopted as the now-iconic AC/DC "lightning bolt" logo. Huerta worked on the branding for the 1980Clint Eastwood filmBronco Billy, as well asSuper Bowl XXVIII, and designed lettering forSuper Bowl XXXIV and movies such asCoal Miner's Daughter,Atlantic City, andStar Trek III: The Search For Spock.[2][4][5]
Huerta later expanded his output beyond the music recording and movie industries to design marks forNabisco,Pepsi, theNational Guitar Museum, andSwiss Army Brands, for whom he also designed watch faces. He designed the mastheads ofArchitectural Digest,Time,Money,People,The Atlantic Monthly,PC Magazine,Adweek,Condé Nast's Traveler,Working Mother,The American Lawyer,The National Law Journal, and theConnecticut Post. His typographic work includes corporate fonts forTime-Life,PepsiCo andCondé Nast.[2][6][7]
Huerta also designed the stringed instrument known asThe Rock Ock for theNational Guitar Museum, which is on tour along with other examples of his guitar art.[2][8]
His work is in the permanent collection of theMuseum of Modern Art.[9][10] In May 2025, the Connecticut Art Directors Club inducted Huerta into the CADC Hall of Fame.[11][12]
