Gerald Austin McHugh Jr. (born 1954) is aUnited States district judge of theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Biography

McHugh was born and raised inWest Philadelphia. McHugh received anArtium Baccalaureus degree,summa cum laude, in 1976 fromSt. Joseph's University. He received aJuris Doctor,cum laude, in 1979 from theUniversity of Pennsylvania Law School. In 1979, he served as alaw clerk to Judge Edmund B. Spaeth of thePennsylvania Superior Court. From 1979 to 1981, he served as a law clerk to JudgeAlfred Leopold Luongo of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. From 1981 to 2004, he was ashareholder at the civil litigation law firm of Litvin, Blumberg, Matusow and Young. From 2004 to 2014, he was a partner at thePhiladelphia law firm of Raynes McCarty, where he handled complexcivil litigation involvingtort,insurance, andcivil rights claims.[1][2]

Federal judicial service

On August 1, 2013, PresidentBarack Obama nominated McHugh to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, to the seat vacated by JudgeHarvey Bartle III, who assumedsenior status on October 1, 2011.[1] On January 16, 2014 his nomination was reported out of committee by a 12–5 vote.[3] On Thursday March 13, 2014Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed a motion to invokecloture on the nomination. On March 26, 2014, theUnited States Senate invoked cloture on his nomination by a 56–43 vote.[4] He was confirmed later that day by a 59–41 vote.[5] He received his judicial commission on March 28, 2014.[2]
