George Kurian (born 20 September 1960) is an Indian politician and lawyer fromKerala, who currently serves as aMinister of State forFisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying andMinority Affairs in thethird Modi ministry. He is a long-standing member of theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who joined the party ever since its formation in 1980. He was a lawyer in theSupreme Court of India. He currently serves as member ofRajya Sabha representingMadhya Pradesh.
Previously, he has served as the vice-chairman ofNational Commission for Minorities and asOfficer on Special Duty (OSD) to the thenMinister of State for Railways,O. Rajagopal.[1][2]
George was born in 1960 as the youngest of five children of Kurian and Annamma. He hails from Nambiakulam inEttumanoor. His education was inKottayam district.[3] He is a Christian who belongs to theSyro-Malabar Catholic Church.[4] Kurian is anLLB graduate and has post-graduation inMaster of Arts.[5] He practices law in theSupreme Court of India.[3]

He joined theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ever since the formation of the party in 1980.[4] George has held various positions, such as membership in the national executive committee of BJP, as the national vice-president ofBharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He was the firstMalayali to serve as the vice-chairman of theNational Commission for Minorities. George was also appointed as anOfficer on Special Duty (OSD) for the former Minister of State for Railways,O. Rajagopal. He later became a core committee member and vice-president of the BJP'sKerala unit. He has also served as a translator for thePrime Minister of IndiaNarendra Modi during his visits to the state.[5]
On 9 June 2024, he was sworn in as aMinister of State forFisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying andMinority Affairs in thethird Modi ministry.[6]
Later, he was elected unopposed asRajya Sabha member fromMadhya Pradesh.
In 2016, Kurian unsuccessfully contested as a BJP candidate fromPuthuppally Assembly constituency against the thenChief Minister of Kerala andIndian National Congress candidateOommen Chandy.[4]

He is married toLt. Col. O. T. Annamma who is a retired nursing officer in theIndian Army.[5] They have two children, Adarsh George Pockaran and Akash George Pockaran.
