American dietitian and veganism activist
George Eisman (August 5, 1950 – April 23, 2017) was an American registereddietitian andveganism activist. He was the co-founder of theAcademy of Nutrition and Dietetics Vegetarian Nutrition Practice Group. In 1993, he was inducted into theVegan Hall of Fame .[ 1]
Early life and education [ edit ] Eisman was born inMiami .[ 2] He was educated atMiddlebury College and obtained a bachelor's degree fromFlorida State University . In 1975, he obtained a master's degree in geography from theUniversity of Toronto and a master's degree in nutrition fromFlorida International University in 1976.[ 2] [ 3]
Eisman was one of seven reviewers for the 1988 position of theAmerican Dietetic Association on vegetarian diets.[ 4] He taught vegan nutrition atMiami Dade College .[ 2] He is credited with establishing the first accredited program on vegan studies in the United States.[ 5] [ 6] The course influencedT. Colin Campbell .[ 6] His lectures were published in 1993.[ 7]
He co-founded the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Vegetarian Nutrition Practice Group.[ 2] In 1994, he wroteThe Most Noble Diet and in 2015A Guide to Vegan Nutrition .[ 2] He was a regular speaker at theNorth American Vegetarian Society 's Summerfest.[ 2] He was nutrition director of the Coalition for Cancer Prevention Through Plant-Based Eating.[ 8] [ 9] [ 10]
Eisman died from cancer atWatkins Glen, New York in 2017, aged 66.[ 2]
