George William Clarkson (11 December 1897 – 15 August 1977) was anAnglicanbishop in the 20th century.[1]
Clarkson was educated atNew College, Oxford andordained in 1927. He was then successively acurate in Wigan,Vicar ofAspull, Sub Dean ofSt Albans Cathedral (andRural Dean ofDunstable) before his ordination to theepiscopate as the fourthBishop of Pontefract with the additional title ofArchdeacon ofPontefract.[2] In 1961, in controversial circumstances not of his own making (many had expected the Provost of Guildford to succeed), he becameDean of Guildford, a position he held for seven years. In retirement he continued to serve as anassistant bishop in theDiocese of Lincoln until his death.
