George Francis Kugler Jr. (March 26, 1925 – August 1, 2004) was an American lawyer who served asNew Jersey Attorney General from 1970 to 1974.
Kugler was born on March 26, 1925, inWoodbury, New Jersey. He attended thePeddie School inHightstown, graduating in 1943. He enlisted in theUnited States Navy after graduation, serving in thePacific Theater of Operations inWorld War II. He was discharged in 1946 and then attendedTemple University, receiving aB.S. degree in 1950. He attendedRutgers School of Law–Camden, where he was Associate Editor of the Law Review, and received hisLL.B. degree in 1953.[1]
Kugler worked for many years as a civil trial attorney with theCamden law firm Brown, Connery, Kulp, & Wille. He was certified in theU.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in 1954, theU.S. Supreme Court in 1957, and theU.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in 1960.[1]
In 1970, GovernorWilliam T. Cahill appointed himNew Jersey Attorney General. He is credited with professionalizing the Attorney General's office, transforming it into a nonpolitical prosecutorial agency. He served until 1974.[2]
Kugler returned to private practice, working as civil litigator with theHaddonfield firm of Archer & Greiner. He died in 2004 at the age of 79 atVirtua-West Jersey Hospital inBerlin. He was survived by his wife, the former Gloria Hicks, and their four sons: George F. Kugler III;Robert B. Kugler, judge of theUnited States District Court for the District of New Jersey; Jeffrey R. Kugler; andPete Kugler, who played for several years in theNational Football League for theSan Francisco 49ers, including in threeSuper Bowls and was a resident ofCherry Hill, New Jersey.[2][3][4]
