Georg von Habsburg[1] (born 16 December 1964) is a Hungarian diplomat. He is referred to inAustria asGeorg Habsburg-Lothringen,[1] inHungary asHabsburg György, and in some international media by hiscourtesy titleArchduke Georg of Austria.[2]

He has served as Hungary's ambassador toSpain since May 2025,[3] having previous been the country's ambassador toFrance from 2020 to 2025.[4]

Born in Germany asPaul Georg Maria Joseph Dominikus, he is the second son (and seventh and youngest child) ofOtto von Habsburg, the lastCrown Prince ofAustria-Hungary, and his wifeRegina Prinzessin von Sachsen-Meiningen. His father, heir ofCharles I and IV, the last monarch of Austria-Hungary, renounced all claims to the Austrian throne in 1961.[5] Georg von Habsburg was raised at his parents' home inexile, Villa Austria inPöcking,Bavaria.

He marriedDuchess Eilika of Oldenburg (born 22 August 1972 inBad Segeberg), the elder daughter of Duke Johann of Oldenburg (younger son ofNikolaus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Oldenburg, and his wifePrincess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont) and Countess Ilka ofOrtenburg, on 18 October 1997 inBudapest, Hungary, contracting, unlike his elder brotherKarl in 1993, adynastic marriage according to the former Habsburghouse laws.[2] While Georg is a Roman Catholic, Eilika has chosen to remain a Lutheran.[2] The couple have three children.[citation needed]

Georg and his family live near the village ofSóskút, inPest County in Hungary. Their eldest child was the first Habsburg to be born in Hungary in more than fifty years.

Career

Georg was named Hungary'sambassador extraordinary to theEuropean Parliament in 1996. He was the President of the HungarianRed Cross from 2004 to 2012.[2]

In December 2020 he was appointed as Hungary's Ambassador toFrance.[6] He served in that role until becoming ambassador toSpain in May 2025.[3]
