Georg Goetz (3 November 1849, inGompertshausen – 1 January 1932, inJena) was a Germanclassical philologist, known for his scholarly treatment ofPlautus andVarro.
From 1870 to 1873 he studied at theUniversity of Leipzig, where his influences includedFriedrich Ritschl. In 1873 he received his doctorate with the dissertationDe temporibus Ecclesiazuson Aristophanis, and following graduation, worked as a tutor inSt. Petersburg. In 1877 he obtained hishabilitation for classical philology at Leipzig, and two years later, became an associate professor at theUniversity of Jena. From 1880 to 1924 he was a full professor of classical philology at Jena, serving asuniversity rector on three separate occasions (1890/91, 1902 and 1910/11).[1]
He was co-editor of a four volume work on the comedies ofPlautus (T. Macci Plauti Comoediae),[2] and made major contributions to theCorpus glossariorum Latinorum and toPauly'sRealencyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft.[3] Other principal written works by Goetz include:
