Thegeneral (spinal) somatic efferent neurons (GSE,somatomotor, orsomatic motor fibers) arise from motor neuron cell bodies in the ventral horns of thegray matter within thespinal cord. They exit the spinal cord through theventral roots, carrying motor impulses toskeletal muscle through aneuromuscular junction.[1]
Of the somatic efferent neurons, there exist subtypes.
Cranial nerves also supply their own somatic efferent neurons to theextraocular muscles and some of the muscles of thetongue.
