Genadendal Residence[χəˈnɑːdəndal] is the officialCape Town residence of thepresident of South Africa,[2] situated on theGroote Schuur estate inRondebosch. It has been the official residence since 1994 whenNelson Mandela took up residence here rather than the main Groote Schuur manor house.[3] The mixedVictorian-Georgian residence, formerly known asWestbrooke, is named after the town ofGenadendal[4] – itself anAfrikaans word meaning "Valley of Mercy",[5] until it was changed to the current name in 1995.[2]
The residence first came into existence in the early 18th century as a grain barn, and was converted into a residence in the mid-1800s.[2]
