Gemma Doyle (born 13 April 1981) is a British former politician who served asMember of Parliament (MP) forWest Dunbartonshire from 2010 to 2015. A member of theLabour and Co-operative parties, she has worked in public affairs since her departure from Parliament.
Gemma Doyle was born on 13 April 1981 inAlexandria,West Dunbartonshire.[1][2] She received aMaster of Arts (MA) in European Civilisation from theUniversity of Glasgow.[3]
Doyle was aresearcher forCathie Craigie, then aMember of Scottish Parliament, and later worked as aLabour Party officer. She has also worked for Holyrood Communications, apolitical communications company, and theInstitution of Civil Engineers.
Following her departure from Parliament, she relocated toLondon and became director of a public affairs firm.[4] Doyle has served as a member of theLondon Labour board and chair ofBermondsey and Old Southwark Labour.[5][6] She is a trustee of theForeign Policy Centre.[7]
At the2004 European Parliament election, she contested theScotland constituency as a Labour candidate.
Doyle was elected asMember of Parliament forWest Dunbartonshire at the2010 general election.[8] She served on theEnergy and Climate Change Committee and theAdministration Committee from July to November 2010.
FollowingEd Miliband'selection as Labour Leader, Doyle was appointed Shadow Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans Minister in October 2010.[9] During her tenure on the opposition front bench, she was a member of the committee scrutinising theArmed Forces Act 2011.[10]
Doyle was defeated by theScottish National Party'sMartin Docherty at the2015 general election.
Doyle was previously married toGregor Poynton, an MP since 2024, and former political strategist andScottish Labour campaigner.[11][12]
