The genusGecinulus was introduced by the English zoologistEdward Blyth in 1840 to accommodate thepale-headed woodpecker (Gecinulus grantia).[2] The genus name is a diminutive of the genus nameGecinus which had been introduced by the German ornithologistFriedrich Boie in 1831.Gecinus combines theClassical Greekgē meaning "earth" or "ground" withkineō meaning "to move".[3]
