Ge with middle hook (Ҕ ҕ; italics:Ҕ ҕ) is a letter of theCyrillic script used in theYukaghir andYakut languages to represent thevoiced velar fricative/ɣ/. InUnicode, this letter is called "Ghe with middle hook".[1] The letter was invented in 1844 byAndreas Johan Sjögren for theOssetian language from the contraction of CyrillicГ andGothic 𐌷 (hagl).[2]
⟨Ҕ⟩ is the fifth letter of theYakut alphabet, placed between⟨Г⟩ and⟨Д⟩. It was formerly also the seventh letter of theAbkhaz alphabet, placed between thedigraphs⟨Гә⟩ and⟨Ҕь⟩; it was replaced by the letter⟨Ӷ⟩.
Ge with middle hook was also used in theChuvash language, inIvan Yakovlev's initial 47-letter alphabet.
