Gata is a village located at the foot of the mountainMosor, 16 miles east of the city ofSplit, and 1.3 miles inland from the coast of theAdriatic Sea.It is administratively located within the city ofOmiš, in theSplit-Dalmatia County.The village had a population of 567 in the 2011 census.[3]It is located in the area ofPoljica, near the riverCetina, at an elevation of 932 ft.[4]
Gata is a part of the historicalRepublic of Poljica, and up until the end of the Republic it was the place where the prince of Poljica was elected every year on the day of their patronSaint George.[5]
The village was heavily damaged duringthe massacre on 1 October 1942, when a group ofChetniks led by Mane Rokvić (underMomčilo Đujić), under the protection of thefascist occupiers, killed 79 villagers and burned the village. This date is still commemorated today in an annual mass.[6]
The village organizes an annual festival called theDays of Ivo Marjanović in honor of this great actor.[7]
Gata contains the ruins of an early Christian basilica.[8]
About 600 villagers live in Gata and the surrounding smaller villages of Podgrac, Gomila, Pocelje, Čovići, and Kuvačići. The majority of the population isRoman Catholic.
