Gary Mule Deer (bornGary C. Miller; November 21, 1939) is an Americancomedian andcountry musician.

Biography

During a career spanning six decades, Gary Mule Deer has performed on many major concert stages in the United States, and has made over 350 television appearances, including many on bothThe Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and theLate Show with David Letterman, both of whose hosts he had met early in his career atThe Comedy Store inLos Angeles. He was one of six comedians, along withJay Leno, to star on the first HBO comedy special,Freddie Prinze and Friends, was the co-host of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert for four years on NBC, a regular onMake Me Laugh, and a frequent judge onThe Gong Show. He has made over 100 appearances onThe Nashville Network, including two years as a cast member onHee Haw.[1] He has appeared in films such asAnnie Hall,Up In Smoke andTilt. He is featured on the DVDs "Jeff Foxworthy's Comedy Classics" and "The World's Greatest Stand-up Comedy Collection" hosted byNorm Crosby. He also has aGary Mule Deer Live CD of his comedy and music. Gary is one of the most-played comedians on the Clean Comedy Channels of bothSirius andXM Satellite Radio.

After being a member ofEpic Records' music groupThe Back Porch Majority,RCA Victor's The New Society, and Paramount Records' Bandanna in the 1960s, he joined with Denny Flannigan in the early 1970s to form a comedy act called "The Muledeer and Moondog Medicine Show".[2] They became regulars onTheJohn Byner Comedy Hour on CBS,Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour on ABC, andMadhouse 90 WithDavid Frost on NBC, and were frequent guests onThe Midnight Special andIn Concert. They also traveled for six years, performing at comedy clubs, thePlayboy Clubs and the college circuit. They opened for many Rock bands, including theDoobie Brothers,Sly and the Family Stone,The Guess Who, andBoz Scaggs.

Gary Mule Deer entertains regularly at casinos inLas Vegas,Lake Tahoe,Atlantic City andReno. On January 10, 2009, he appeared atCarnegie Hall.[3] For 31 years, he toured as a special guest withJohnny Mathis on select dates, performing a stand-up routine in between sets.[4] He performed at Mathis' last concert before his retirement from touring atBergen Performing Arts Center.[5] He performs often on theGrand Ole Opry stage, and was invited to become amember of the Opry on January 6, 2023.[6]

Mule Deer was once roommates with comedianSteve Martin and musicianMichael Johnson.[7] Mule Deer supplied the first joke Martin submitted to Tommy Smothers onThe Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.[8]
