Gansevoort is ahamlet in thetown ofNorthumberland inSaratoga County,New York, United States. The hamlet of Gansevoort is named forPeter Gansevoort,[1] a hero in the siege ofFort Stanwix (Fort Schuyler) which contributed to the downfall of Burgoyne's army at theBattle of Saratoga during the Revolutionary War.
Gansevoort was originally settled by theMohawk andIroquoisIndians[2] and many burial mounds and artifacts from this time can still be found in the area. White settlers moved in around the 1760s, brought in following military and hunting camps.[3] The hamlet was an important stop on theUnderground Railroad, given its proximity toCanada.[4]
TheDutch Reformed Church of Gansevoort andGansevoort Mansion are listed on theNational Register of Historic Places.[5]
