Gamanashrama (pronounced gamanāshrama[1]) is aragam inCarnatic music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 53rdMelakarta rāgam in the 72melakarta rāgam system of Carnatic music. This is the Carnatic equivalent ofMarva inHindustani Classical Music.
Gamanashrama is the Prathi Madhyamam equivalent of the 17th Melakarta raga Suryakantam
It is calledGamakakriya inMuthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music.[1][2][3]

It is the 5th rāgam in the 9thchakra Brahma. Themnemonic name isBrahma-Ma. The mnemonic phrase issa ra gu mi pa dhi nu.[2] Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇa structure (ascending and descendingscale) is as follows (seeswaras in Carnatic music for details on below notation and terms):
The notes used in this scale areshadjam, shuddha rishabham, antara gandharam, prati madhyamam, panchamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham andkakali nishadham. As it is amelakarta rāgam, by definition it is asampurna rāgam (has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale). It is theprati madhyamam equivalent ofSuryakantam, which is the 17thmelakarta.
