Gail Hershatter

American historian of Modern China

Gail Hershatter is an Americanhistorian of Modern China who holds the Distinguished Professor of History chair at theUniversity of California, Santa Cruz.[1] She previously taught in the history department atWilliams College.[2]

She graduated fromHampshire College with a B.A., fromStanford University with a M.A., and fromStanford University with a Ph.D. She was elected vice-president of theAssociation for Asian Studies in 2010[3] and subsequently elected president the following year.[4]She was an assistant director for the documentaryThe Gate of Heavenly Peace.[5]

Her research interests include modern Chinese women's history and labor studies.[6] Her 2011 monograph,The Gender of Memory, uses the lens of rural women inShaanxi Province, China, to examine revolutionary China in the 1950s and 1960s.[7]
